Teeth can require extraction for many reasons and, on rare occasions, they're not even there in the first place. In these situations we need to discuss your replacement options... let's talk dental implants.
Implants are titanium screws that are surgically placed in the jawbone underneath the gumline. This screw will then support a replacement tooth, or bridge, or even a full denture. Depending on the amount and quality of the jawbone, a bone augmentation with a graft may need to be carried out prior to, or during implant placement.
You could be suitable for dental implants if:
You have one or more missing teeth
Healthy, fully developed (ideally over the age of 21 years old) bone
Lack of periodontal disease
Excellent motivation to oral hygiene
Appointments (all case dependant) - firstly a consultation will be scheduled and all the treatment options and procedures for replacing your missing tooth will be discussed fully. Next we will assess the amount and quality of bone using a cone bean CT scan of the proposed site. The scan will be discussed fully along with the plan for the treatment.
Once all parties are happy we then organise a surgical appointment, during which the dental implant will be placed. After a waiting period of around 3 months, the implant will be tested for osseointegration (binding to the surrounding bone) and if successful then a mould will be taken of the implant and a dental crown constructed by our specialised lab. This crown will be either screwed or cemented in place in the third appointment and an x-ray will be taken to ensure proper seating.
As with all dental procedures, implants have a success rate. Exceptional oral hygiene and regular check ups are required to help prevent early failure from implant gum disease and other complications.
